Program Policies

CNG believes wholeheartedly in preparing our students to be citizens of leadership and of service to others; consequently, the Social Service Department places particular focus on our Code of Honor´s pillar of Community Welfare, with the expectation that all students “participate in and are committed to school and community activities and organizations.” As a result, the requirements for social service at CNG are as follows:

All students, whether in Bachillerato or High School diploma programs, will need to complete the following minimum requirements for social service:

  • 20 hours in grade 9

  • 20 hours in grade 10

  • 20 hours in grade 11

  • 20 hours in grade 12 (the 40 hours for grades 11 and 12 may be combined)

All students are expected to enroll in social service activities at the same time as they register for the following year’s classes. Students who wish to change social service programs, must submit a Change of Social Service Program Request Form to the Social Service Coordinator for approval.

For students transferring to CNG, an official, signed confirmation of hours and type of service from previous school(s) needs to be submitted to the Social Service Coordinator for all those hours to be accepted as part of their CNG history. All students who transfer to CNG are expected to meet the expectations above; however, unless they are a returning student they are not expected to bring hours to the school. If no hours are brought in at grade 11 for a senior student, he/she will be expected to comply with the 80 hours during senior year as prescribed by Colombian law.

For students applying for approval to participate in non-CNG service programs, a written request must be submitted to the Social Service Coordinator at least 14 days prior to beginning the service activity. All details of the program, including name, email and phone of adult in charge need to be included in the request, along with the specific activities that will be carried about. The Social Service Coordinator, in conjunction with the High School Principal, will approve or deny the program and notify students. Applying for service hours from non-CNG managed programs does not guarantee approval.

The Social Service Department highly recommends students make a formal proposal and receive confirmation BEFORE planning to participate in any non-CNG service activity; however, hours completed in an external service beforehand may also be taken into account. A written request for approval must be submitted to the Social Service Coordinator, including details of the program, name, email and phone of adult in charge, as well as specific activities that were carried out.

Service can be performed during the summer break or other recess periods. In this case, students must present a written document detailing all aspects of their social service experience, contact information of the supervisor from the non-profit organization prior to the experience. The Social Service Coordinator will approve (or not) the plan prior to service beginning. For approved plans, upon completion of the experience the student is expected to provide photos and a reflection component in which the student shares the impact his/her service had on the community served and how he/she grew in their character development as a result of their participation. The Social Service Coordinator will then approve or deny the social service hours and notify students. Applying for service hours from non-CNG managed programs does not guarantee approval.

For students who participate in sports or activities at a highly competitive level (practicing several hours each school day as well as weekend tournaments or commitments), a letter from the sports organization or club, identifying the student as being involved at a highly competitive level, providing details about the schedule is required. This letter must be submitted to the Social Service Coordinator and High School Principal at the beginning of the school year or as soon as the student begins the intensive training. The student must also submit a letter expressing how involvement in this sport/activity relates to the law above, and how he/she will grow in their character as a result of their participation.

The Social Service Coordinator and High School Associate Principal/Principal will meet with the student to understand the case and make a determination. Depending upon the case, students may be granted:

  • Up to 20 hours of validated social service during 9th grade.

  • Up to 20 hours of validated social service during 10th grade.

In conclusion, students involved in highly competitive training must carry out the mandatory 80 hours of social service in grades 11 and/or 12 as required by Colombian law in order to graduate.

Students who do not speak Spanish or students who are not allowed to do their social service off campus due to security concerns are requested to submit an email indicating the issue in a timely manner. The Social Service Coordinator and High School Administration will work with the student to identify appropriate opportunities for social service.
