AP Music Theory

AP Music Theory is a one year college level course in musicianship. This course is designed for serious music students and involves critical thinking and analysis of various musical scores designed to develop students’ abilities to recognize, understand and describe the basic materials and processes of music as heard or presented in a score. Students will gain knowledge in various aspects of melody, harmony, texture, rhythm, and form. Students will develop skills in dictation, sight reading, harmonization, and critical listening, as well as skills in basic music analysis. To be accepted in the course, students must be able to read and write music in standard notation. It is also necessary that students take the Pre-AP Music Theory course before attempting to participate in the AP level course. This course requires a high degree of commitment to academic work and to a program designed to meet college standards. The goal of the AP Music Theory course is to prepare students for the AP Music Theory Exam.
